photo1Just when you thought other car makers were catching up, just when you thought that it was safe to start looking at other sport sedans, BMW upped the ante. That’s right, BMW has been watching the moves of the strong contenders in the crowded “near luxury” sedan market-as if any of these cars are “near-missing” the luxury mark-and played the ultimate trump card by giving the 3-Series more power.

Said infusion comes in the form of a 32-horsepower boost to the marvelous inline-six-cylinder engine that also serves in BMW’s Z3, X5 and 5-Series. To sum up what most everybody in automotive journalist circles feels about the new 330i: if you liked the 328i, you’ll love the 330i. Read the rest of this entry »

photo2In the past, the words “sport” and “wagon” presented such as dichotomy that they could never be placed side-by-side. In the time of leisure suits and disco balls, wagons were decidedly un-cool and the only time Dad would be caught behind the wheel was when he was shuttling the family off on a summertime trip to the Grand Canyon.

Two decades later, the wagon is hot and, with the entry of several new models from the Europeans, it is definitely sporty. In fact, BMW’s new 3-Series sport wagon seems to be the perfect match for hip dads (or moms) who need the extra cargo space, but have a yearning for a performance-oriented sedan. BMW reports its target buyer as being a near even split between the sexes (55% men, 45% women) who are 45 years old and married (70%) with an annual household income of $110,000. 08The timing would have it. BMW introduced the X6 Hybrid on the same day that France and Germany publish figures indicating the return of economic growth.
