Ford is developing a new way of automotive propulsion, and its implications in the car industry are immense. The hybrid car hydraulic Ford could be the biggest innovation since the internal combustion engine, and Ford is at the forefront with its F-150 Hybrid. It says the system is simply great and could put Ford in a leadership position in the com pet market gone pickup.
The idea behind the current hybrid cars is well known, the main energy source comes from the gasoline car, which recharges the batteries that drive the car at low speeds. Hydraulic hybrid cars work the same way, only instead of batteries, excess energy is stored in hydraulic cylinders. That, in itself, is not revolutionary, except that the current batteries are not an efficient way to store energy, and hydraulic storage exceeds them by 300% efficiency. Even the new generation batteries lithium ion do not approach the efficiency of hydraulic energy storage.
The standard F-150 weighs 4800 pounds, which is 65% larger than the Toyota Prius, yet incredibly the Hydraulic F-150 with a continuously variable transmission reaches the Prius with a consumption of 60 miles per fuel alon in the city, which is an improvement of 400% compared to the version that operates on gasoline only.
The F-150 is a perfect car to house the hydraulic hybrid technology thanks to its height and its constitution, adding this system to smaller vehicles could be tricky, but with this new system, small cars could become obsolete.
There are few of us who don’t have some fond memory of the original Thunderbird. Those of us with grey up top may have had a love affair from the day the showroom opened in 1955. Our next generation fell in love with the unattainable white T-bird that the elusive Susanne Sommers frustrated Richard Dreyfuss with in ‘American Graffiti . (I just saw a vision! I saw a goddess. Come on, you’ve got to catch up to her…This was the most perfect, dazzling creature I’ve ever seen…She spoke to me. She spoke to me right through the window. I think she said, ‘I love you A lot of guys thought Dreyfuss was talking about the car.) Even our current generation has been captivated by the images from old movies, TV shows and vintage car meets. On lots of lips is the question, why did they quit making this car? Read the rest of this entry »
Once in the dark ages of the sixties, the corporate watchword was ‘Ford has a better idea!’ complete with the exclamation mark and often with a light bulb in place of the ‘O’ in FORD. Well, maybe they were TH!Nking ahead for they have again found a use for the exclamation mark and the light bulb is completely appropriate.
In this new community of modern rustic half million dollar cottages, it was obvious that this is where the clean and friendly TH!NK Neighbor was meant to be. The weekend was highlighted by a classic car and boat show, and the cart was able to roll smoothly among its displayed brethren, melding with the other onlookers without disruption, and providing my arthritic knees and ankles with welcome relief. Still, I could chat with the other attendees and owners without the perceived distancing of being in a steel vehicular cocoon, and it left nary a mark on the turf. Truly, this critter is friendly, fun and respectful of its environment. Read the rest of this entry »
Ford swung for the fences with the radical restyling of the Taurus in 1996. Some think the result was just a long out. The radical oval theme did not catch on with buyers in the way Ford had hoped. So recently, they did a major restyle of the body and interior. This time instead of trying to knock the cover off the ball, they made good solid contact and may have hit a home run.
The Taurus faces fierce competition in the mid-size market from two very serious imports, the Camry and the Accord. Both of those cars are well respected by consumers, consumer groups, and the automotive press. Ford had intended with the ?96 redesign to meet (or exceed) the quality of both the Accord and the Camry and to surpass them in styling. Well, they soon stumbled on the quality end and in hindsight they went a bit too far with the styling. Read the rest of this entry »
