Road Atlanta, Georgia- The 996-type Porsche 911 Carrera 4 moves through the Road Atlanta race course like a fighter jet slices the sky. Smooth as silk under my piloting but a work of art during the recce laps with race-car driver Pierre Savoy. A smile starts to crease your face; your right hand immediately reaches for the gear lever, while the other tenderly caresses the steering wheel. Suddenly, the bright lights of Hollywood and a 24 hour stretch at LeMans aren?t so far removed from reality. Read the rest of this entry »
Never more was this evidenced then when, with a long row of freshly polished Porsche 911?s arranged with military precision, we were obliged to listen to the latest changes made to Germany?s most important export, rather than experiencing their newness immediately for ourselves from behind the steering wheel. Only a Kentucky Derby start could stir this level of foaming anticipation.
Unknown to my fellow maniacal scribes, I had the inside track on which pony to ride first. My cohort and I had been directed to one specific 911 Carrera 4S, for reasons which included slightly higher tire pressures and brakes that were sufficiently warmed up from the early morning drive in.
